What is Mechatronics?
To explain what mechatronic engineering is, we can mention the definition proposed by J. A. Rietdijk: "Mechatronics is the synergetic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and processes." As it combines several engineering in one, its strength is its versatility. Versatility to create better products, processes or systems. Mechatronics is not a new concept, but the sum of certain areas of engineering.
Mechatronics in industry
This discipline has three main objectives: automate the equipment, create intelligent products and create harmony between mechanical and electronic components. Mechatronics can be applied to many industrial fields, from medicine to mining, through the pharmaceutical industry, mechanical industry, automotive, textiles, food ... and many more.
Automated Systems
Automated systems are computer-based systems that perform tasks without human intervention or assistance. They are designed to operate automatically and continuously, often in response to predefined triggers or conditions. The use of automation has become increasingly popular across various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, finance, transportation, and more.
SCADA HMI
SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a control system architecture comprising computers, networked data communications and graphical user interfaces for high-level supervision of machines and processes.
Motion control
Motion control is a sub-field of automation, encompassing the systems or sub-systems involved in moving parts of machines in a controlled manner. Motion control systems are extensively used in a variety of fields for automation purposes, including precision engineering, micromanufacturing, biotechnology, and nanotechnology.
Industrial Communications
Industrial communication refers to a data transmission system designed to enable communication between field devices, such as sensors, actuators, and controllers, and the monitoring and control systems in industry.
Robotics
It is the discipline that deals with the design, operation, manufacture, study and application of automatons or robots. It combines areas such as mechanical, electrical, electronic, biomedical and computer science engineering to create tools that can perform tasks efficiently, quickly and in environments inaccessible to humans.
Collaborative Robots
Technology that allows repetitive, non-ergonomic or dangerous processes to be carried out, capable of working together with operators, without the need for safety systems and enclosures present in traditional robotic facilities.
Manipulator
It is the part of the robot that comes into contact with the parts when moving them, holding them or generating measurements.
Programmable Controlers
An electronic control system and associated instrumentation used for industrial process control. Such as, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, or DCSs, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
Continuous Processes
Continuous production is a flow production method used to manufacture, produce, or process materials without interruption. Continuous production is called a continuous process or a continuous flow process because the materials, either dry bulk or fluids that are being processed are continuously in motion, undergoing chemical reactions or subject to mechanical or heat treatment. Continuous processing is contrasted with batch production.
Artificial Vision
It is a scientific discipline that includes methods for acquiring, processing, analyzing, and understanding real-world images in order to produce numerical or symbolic information so that they can be processed by a computer.
Identification Communications
Industrial coding is the process by which a unique identifier is assigned to each piece of equipment, product, item or system within a company. Industrial labels and other elements such as cards or signs offer a fast and reliable solution for the identification of equipment and facilities. They are systems such as RFID, BCR, NFC and QR.
Sensors
A sensor is a device, module, machine, or subsystem that detects events or changes in its environment and sends the information to other electronics, frequently a computer processor. With advances in micromachinery and easy-to-use microcontroller platforms, the uses of sensors have expanded beyond the traditional fields of temperature, pressure and flow measurement.
Electric Motors
An electric motor is a device that turns electrical energy into mechanical rotational energy through the action of magnetic fields generated in its coils. They are electric rotating machines composed of a stator and a rotor.
Vacuum
"A vacuum is space devoid of matter. The word is derived from the Latin adjective vacuus (neuter vacuum) meaning ""vacant"" or ""void"". An approximation to such vacuum is a region with a gaseous pressure much less than atmospheric pressure.
In industry, vacuum allows a temporary bond to be generated between the machine and the workpiece. This makes it possible to move light elements in production."
Pneumatics
Within physics, pneumatics is part of the mechanical branch and studies the balance and movement of gaseous flows. It is also the technology that uses compressed air as a mode of transmission of the energy necessary to move and operate mechanisms.
Distribution Panel
Is a component of an electricity supply system that divides an electrical power feed into subsidiary circuits while providing a protective fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a common enclosure.
Hydraulics
It is the branch of physics that studies the behavior of liquids based on their specific properties. In other words, it observes and analyzes the mechanical properties of liquids depending on the forces to which they are subjected.
